Bourke Street runs across the photo, with Stephen street heading south, away from the photographer. The Eastern Market sits on the right hand side of the photo. The market had sections for hay, straw and fruit. It was also referred to as the Hay Market and Paddy's Market in those days. The market went through a number of changes

and a number of hansom cabs and carriages

then under construction in 1841

This particular building was completed in 1899

Connell's Hotel is on the corner of Flinders Lane on the right hand side

around 1913-1914

similar to a number of other large hotels in the city

Notes from the State Library tell us that this image "Shows Brunswick tram and several horse drawn vehicles

Flinders Street Station as we know it was still 40 years away from being built
